Description Hypnos 2007-01-15 12:41:20 UTC
Text in complex Unicode script (in my case, Bengali) gets scrambled. Consider the following URL:

http://smandal.livejournal.com/70702.html

1. If you visit the URL in Epiphany, you'll see the Bengali text scrambled.

2. Now invoke Epiphany by "MOZ_ENABLE_PANGO=1 epiphany" from a terminal, and the text renders correctly.

3. Now try Firefox-2.0 -- it renders the text correctly straight away.

I've encountered this bug in epiphany-2.14.x as well as the latest 2.16.2 -- looks like an upstream bug.

Abiword also has the same problem. When I copy the correct text from Firefox into an Abiword document, I get the same mangled rendering as Epiphany!

OTOH, GTK widgets (e.g, Epiphany tab titles) display Bengali text correctly.

After some investigating, I'm closing this bug:

* Epiphany disables Pango by default due to difficulties with MathML. You can turn it on in GConf under /apps/epiphany/web/enable_pango (some languages are still filtered in the schema file 'epiphany-pango.schemas'). Bug ref:

http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=328844

* Abiword won't have full-fledged Pango support until the 2.6 series. Ref:

Everything else in GTK+ using GTK+ widgets seems to be doing well.
