gnome-panel 1.4 should be prevented from installing if gnome-panel 2.2.x is present, as it overwrites key parts of gnome-panel 2.2. A libpanel ebuild should instead be created and made a dependency of XMMS and any other GNOME application needing to build against the panel. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3.
xmms + gnome needs the 1.4 panel, so nothing much we can do about that or we should drop it alltogether. What does 1.4 overwrite in 2.x ? A quick check only brings up the screenshot util, which isn't very nice i agree. Did i miss anything ? 1.4 and 2.x should be parallel installable.
I'll fix the screenshooter, it wasnt an issue earlier because gnome-panel 2 didn't have this item then. as for a libpanel ebuild, it wouldnt be deviceable since it needs the panel executable as well, doing so is the debian way, and something I'd consider a monstrosity along with the conceptual idea that versionnumbers are part of packagenames.
now fixed in portage with gnome-panel-1.4.2-r2
