This bug only occurs when starting this binary from a batchfile/shellscript. So please try prepending the "kstart"-command or appending the "&"-sign. Or just launching it from a shell-script. vlc --extraintf rc --no-wx-embed --rc-fake-tty --rc-unix /tmp/vlc_cmd&

Around the same time i reported it on this form. Some developer wasnt able to reproduce it. Also sent the mentioned link, but no response since then.
shoud be finally fixed in 0.8.6f
