I followed the procedures on www.gentoo-wiki.org in order to install ALSA support, but after following an in-kernel compile of the ALSA system, it failed. I then removed ALSA from the kernel and went on to alsa-driver, with the same result. After that, someone in the forums updated that he had the same issue, and that he solved it by upgrading to 2.6.19-r2 gentoo-sources kernel, and activating the Intel HDA Support module. I followed those steps, and failed too. I then went onto loading the LiveDVD and checking which modules were used to play sounds, and started removing modules until sound stopped working, this is the result: * snd_intel8x0 * snd_ac97_codec * snd_ac97_bus * snd_pcm * snd_timer * snd * snd_page_alloc (ALSA DID work when the livedvd was booted) After rebooting back to my system, I checked the modules, and this was the result: * snd_intel8x0 * snd_ac97_codec * snd_ac97_bus * snd_pcm * snd_timer * snd * soundcore * snd_page_alloc I was then pointed by people on IRC to this site: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/showthread.php?t=270323 And added this line: "options snd-intel8x0 ac97_quirk=1 buggy_irq=1 enable=1 index=0" to my ALSA configuration file Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: None.
