This patch makes sound more responsive/better for machines with onboard cs4231 (u5, u10, others). It's scheduled upstream for 2.6.20.

Both commits (d35a1b9e10481c9f1d3b87e778a0f1f6a0a2dd48 titled "[SOUND] Sparc CS4231: Fix IRQ return value and initialization." and f9af1d9deaaffe6803dec693748498886915d766 titled "[SOUND] Sparc CS4231: Use 64 for period_bytes_min") went into 2.6.19.2 which should hit the tree pretty soon.

Fixed in genpatches-2.6.19-5 (gentoo-sources-2.6.19-r4)
