I've still encountered the same problem as described in bug 6132 (which has been closed). I've installed from stage1 tarball (1.4 rc2), and it did not install the symlink necessary to make the code listing for grub.conf (as suggeted in chapter 25 of the x86 intallation guide) find the kernel and splashimage. This was not a problem during an earlier install from stage3. I installed the stage1 tarball from the 1.4 rc2 Athlon CD-image. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install from an existing Linux installation (I don't think this step is necessary to reproduce the bug). 2. Unpack stage1 tarball from 1.4 rc2 Athlon CD-image. 3. Proceed as described in Installation guide, specifically chapter 25. 4. Boot with grub installed. Actual Results: Grub splash image and kernel image not found. Expected Results: Install a symlink in boot partition's root directory to itself (called "boot").
maybe a note or a warning should be added, but this should also be fixed on the stage files
Yes, I forgot to suggest that as an interim solution: Add something like the following to the documentation until the stage tarballs are fixed: Some users report problems with installation of a symlink necessary to make grub find the kernel image and splash image. Be sure to have that symlink by typing: ln -s ....
I'd rather see the grub.conf use (hd0,0)/vmlinuz and have a warning that, if /boot isn't on a seperate partition, you need to write (hd0,0)/boot/vmlinuz.
It seems to be fixed in all our current stages. I'm marking this bug as fixed.
