Description Alex Buell 2007-01-08 20:09:55 UTC
distcc fails with OOM error; should be able to retry operation with another host.

Reproducible: Didn't try

Steps to Reproduce:
Needs GCC to run out of memory when running on a distcc farm.

Actual Results:
When OOM happens, emerge via distcc fails. This can result in a huge amount of time wasted when building large applications such as OpenOffice.

Expected Results:
It should have tried again on a different distcc server.

There is a patch floating around on the 'net that fixes this. See:

Well, running out of memory to the extent that OOM is in action is really not a distcc bug. Also, there's no patch at the link you've posted.

Sorry, I must have input the wrong URL! The patch is contained within the URL as below:

http://www.mail-archive.com/distcc@lists.samba.org/msg02174.html

Thanks.

That patch is 2.5 years old.

This is also an upstream issue and not a Gentoo specific problem. We can't make your volunteer machines get more memory.
