Whenever xchat is started, it creates two icons in gnomes notification area. Closing the window makes both icons disappear.

are you sure you don't have xchat-systray installed too?

Yes I had... but it worked with the previous version of xchat. Unmerging xchat-systray also solved the problem. I thought it was just a plugin, not something incompatible...

xchat-2.8.0 now includes it's own tray icon, hence you get two tray icons. xchat-systray has some more feature, this is why don't block them. emerge xchat should print an informational message about this, when you have xchat-systray installed.

You can disable the builtin icon under Preferences -> Chatting -> Alerts -> Enable system tray icon
