Description Maciej Jaśkowski 2007-01-06 12:44:47 UTC
roots([1,1,1,1]) fails to give a proper answer. Instead it writes "error: dgeev failed to converge". It might some problem with libraries or with this particular version of octave (it happens in version 2.1.73 and in 2.1.73-r2) I suppose. On other computer with version 2.1.71 everything goes smoothly.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. roots([1,1,1,1]);
2.
3.

Actual Results:
error: dgeev failed to converge
error: evaluating assignment expression near line 65, column 9
error: evaluating if command near line 62, column 5
error: evaluating if command near line 59, column 3
error: called from `roots' in file `/usr/share/octave/2.1.73/m/polynomial/roots.m'

Expected Results:
ans =

  -1.00000 + 0.00000i
   0.00000 + 1.00000i

Hi Maciej,

Thanks for your report! I am guessing that you don't have any
blas and lapack installed on your machine. In this case octave
will use its internal versions which are broken and result in the
errors that you've been observing. If this is the case you have
two options. Either emerge any of virtual/lapack (e.g. lapack-reference
or lapack-atlas, the former compiles much faster but is not
as optimized) and then re-emerge octave-2.1.732 or emerge
octave-2.1.73-r2 which will force you to install virtual/lapack for
just that reason.

Best,
Markus

Hi Maciej,

Any news on this?

Thanks,
Markus
Comment 3 Markus Dittrich (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2007-05-12 16:27:04 UTC
I am closing this one as fixed since it should not
happen any more in octave-2.1.73-r2 for the
reasons given in comment #1.

Please re-open if you still have similar problems with -r2.

Thanks,
Markus
