Description Jan Glaescher 2007-01-05 10:04:39 UTC
Hi all!

I tried emerging vim-core 7.0.17 and at the end of the configure I got this error message:

configure: WARNING: Cache variable ac_cv_prog_STRIP contains a newline.
configure: updating cache auto/config.cache
configure: creating auto/config.status
config.status: creating auto/config.mk
config.status: WARNING: config.mk.in seems to ignore the --datarootdir setting
config.status: creating auto/config.h
configure: WARNING: Cache variable ac_cv_prog_STRIP contains a newline.
make: Entering directory `/var/tmp/portage/vim-core-7.0.17/work/vim7/src'
auto/config.mk:90: *** missing separator.  Stop.
make: Leaving directory `/var/tmp/portage/vim-core-7.0.17/work/vim7/src'

The same error message occurs when I try to emerge vim-7.0.17

/var/tmp/portage/vim-core-7.0.17/work/vim7/src/auto/config.mk on line 89-90 reads like this:

STRIP           = /bin/true
/usr/bin/true faking strip

However, /usr/bin/true is a link to /bin/true which belongs to coreutils

pts/1:root@rothko:~ # equery b `which true`
[ Searching for file(s) /usr/bin/true,/bin/true in *... ]
sys-apps/coreutils-6.4 (/usr/bin/true -> /bin/true)
sys-apps/coreutils-6.4 (/bin/true)

I temporarily removed the symlink in /usr/bin/true and the configuration (and compliation) of vim-core and vim (both 7.0.17) went just fine. So far, I am happy, but I wanted to report this for the developers.

Happy (bug-free) new year!
Jan

Here is some additional information:

I can't reproduce this here, using coreutils-6.4 and vim-7.0.17. Are you sure you ran hash -r after installing coreutils, per the post-install instructions? If you can still produce this error after that, please re-open this bug.

Comment 5 Jan Glaescher 2007-02-21 08:22:03 UTC
Hi Mike,

I just ran into the same problem as before, wehn "emerge -Du world" tried to upgrade to vim-core-7.0.174.

Here is the error message (complete build log as attachment):
configure: WARNING: Cache variable ac_cv_prog_STRIP contains a newline.
configure: updating cache auto/config.cache
configure: creating auto/config.status
config.status: creating auto/config.mk
config.status: WARNING: config.mk.in seems to ignore the --datarootdir setting
config.status: creating auto/config.h
configure: WARNING: Cache variable ac_cv_prog_STRIP contains a newline.

auto/config.mk:90: *** missing separator.  Stop.
make: Leaving directory `/var/tmp/portage/app-editors/vim-core-7.0.174/work/vim7/src'

!!! ERROR: app-editors/vim-core-7.0.174 failed.
Call stack:
  ebuild.sh, line 1614:   Called dyn_compile
  ebuild.sh, line 971:   Called qa_call 'src_compile'
  environment, line 3623:   Called src_compile
  ebuild.sh, line 1304:   Called vim_src_compile
  vim.eclass, line 476:   Called die

I re-emerged coretuils-6.4 and ran hash -r (as you suggested), but the compile failure persisted. [When I re-emerge coreutils I did not get the hash -r post install message?!?]

In the other attachment you'll find/var/tmp/portage/app-editors/vim-core-7.0.174/work/vim7/src/auto/config.mk

lines 90-91 read:
STRIP           = /bin/true
/usr/bin/true faking strip

So, there are again two entries for "true" separate by a newline ...

As before, removing the symbolic link /usr/bin/true (->/bin/true) solved the issue, but this is really not very handy for every vim-core upgrade.

Do you need any other information? (emerge --info remained the same since the first posting of this bug).

Thanks,
Jan

Hmm, well, I was digging around for another bug and I saw some code related to this in the vim.eclass. I changed it, so I'd like you to try one more time (also using the latest vim version now, which is 7.0.201).

Thanks, Mike. Great work. It now works on my system (with coreutils 6.7-r1 and vim-core 7.0.201. I mark the bug as FIXED
