Description Samuel Greenfeld 2003-02-18 22:01:12 UTC
Flipit is a small command-line based utility to control an X10 CM17A
"Firecracker" X10 controller. The CM17A is a little dongle that fits on a serial
port (with passthrough to another device supported), that transmits an RF signal
to an X10 RF remote control receiver.

An X10 system as a whole can be used to turn on/off appliances, dim lights, etc.
See X10.com (Yes; they're the source of a bunch of widely considered annoying
ads.). Their devices are also rebranded and resold by a variety of firms (Radio
Shack, etc.).

NOTES:
1. Flipit is under its own license (see source package for details). The license
appears to be BSD-based. Please modify the ebuild to point to the proper
license should it be accepted.
2. The user who runs flippit has to write access to the serial port the
CM17A/Firecracker is on. Depending on what else is sharing the serial port
(modem, etc.) this might be considered a security risk. Flipit does not have
any internal access control mechanism of its own.
3. In some user-dependant(?) situations, there may be the need to repetitively
send a command in order for the CM17A to recognize it has to send data and/or
for the X10 radio reciever listening for the CM17A to pick up the command
properly. For instance, in order for me to locally turn on/off a device, I need
to send the "on" or "off" command twice. However, I have no such issues when it
comes to dimming.

Last upstream release 2 years ago. Plus, maintaining this requires appropriate hardware, non-trivial requirement really. If you manage to find out a developer for this, feel tree to reopen.

Marking LATER.
