The segfault occurs with one particular user account. When I log in with a different account, the screensaver works normally.
hum that probably means there is something wrong in your personnal settings. Now to find what exactly is wrong... You could start by cleaning up your gnome-screensaver settings with : gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/gnome-screensaver if this is still happening, could you specify with which version, thanks.
I am experiencing this one too. I have gnome-screensaver-2.22.2 and cleaning up /apps/gnome-screensaver as suggested does not work. If I manually run "cosmos", i.e.: /usr/libexec/gnome-screensaver/slideshow --location=/usr/share/pixmaps/backgrounds/cosmos I don't have any segfaults and the program works correctly displaying a slideshow in a window.
