Description Romualdas Mincevičius 2006-12-23 14:30:51 UTC
Overview Description:

If system is ipv6 enabled and local environment variable MPD_HOTS is set to "localhost" mpc quits with error.

Program build tested:

media-sound/mpc-0.12.0

Steps to Reproduce:

1) Compile in or as module (module name ipv6) ipv6 support in the kernel. Load the module with modprobe ipv6;
2) Start MPD daemon (by default mpd is bind to "localhost" which is 127.0.0.1);
3) Set local environment variable MPD_HOST to "localhost" or specify it on the command line before the command itself;
4) Execute mpc.

Actual Results:

$ MPD_HOST="localhost" mpc
error: problems getting a response from "localhost" on port 6600 : Connection refused

Workaround:

Set local environment variable MPD_HOST to "127.0.0.1". mpc than behaves as expected.

Additional information:

Comment 2 Andrej Kacian (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-12-24 04:38:11 UTC
The strace output suggests that mpc resolves localhost as, and is trying to connect to, ::1 - this might be a bug in mpc (inconsistent behavior between mpd and mpc, as mpd picks first entry for localhost, while mpc picks last).

If you're not content with using the workaround, please file a bug upstream, or suggest a change to mpd package (perhaps default bind explicitly to "127.0.0.1" or "::1", depending on the ipv6 USE flag). I don't have an ipv6 setup available, so I can't debug much here.

Closing as UPSTREAM, since this is being taken care of by upstream devs. I'm watching the upstream bug. Thanks for reporting it.
