Hi,

upon updating dbus to the 1.0.2 version, media sensing of cds and dvds in gnome
(desktop/nautilus, drive-mount applet) got broken. I believe that the 0.9x
versions worked ok, but they are out of portage now so I can't check them again.
Detection and media mounting for usb/firewire and luks encrypted drives
continues to work with dbus-1.0.2

I can confirm that when dbus (and only dbus) is reverted back to dbus-0.62-r2,
and all the dependent packages are rebuilt, that the media sensing in cd/dvd
drives functions again.

As for packages in the pipeline (as far as I can tell):
[ebuild R ] sys-fs/udev-103 USE="(-selinux)" 0 kB
[ebuild R ] sys-apps/hal-0.5.8.1 USE="acpi crypt dmi doc pcmcia -debug
(-selinux)" 0 kB [3]
[ebuild R ] sys-apps/dbus-0.62-r2 USE="X doc gtk mono python -debug -qt3
-qt4 (-selinux)" 0 kB
[ebuild R ] gnome-base/gnome-volume-manager-2.17.0 USE="crypt doc -debug" 0
kB [1]
[ebuild R ] gnome-base/gnome-applets-2.16.2 USE="acpi doc gstreamer -apm
-debug -ipv6" 0 kB

Total: 5 packages (5 reinstalls), Size of downloads: 0 kB
Portage overlays:
 [1] /usr/overlay/xiccarph
 [2] /usr/overlay/misc
 [3] /usr/portage/local/layman/gentopia

The gnome-volume-manager ebuild is just a version number bump from the 2.15.0
version in portage that I created while trying to explore this problem.

I tried to poke around a bit with dbus-monitor, device-manager etc. but didn't
find documentation about debugging/expected-output to help me figure out where
the problem is occurring. I am willing to provide any additional output
requested or perform additional tests as directed.

Additional notes:
1. upon reboot/new session - the media in the drive is correctly detected.
2. ejecting of the media continues to work, but no changes are reflected in hal
for the media, and the desktop/nautilus/drive-mount are not updated.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. put an audio cd in cd/dvd drive, the media is correctly detected.
2. emerge dbus-1.0.2, revdep-rebuild
3. put an audio cd in cd/dvd drive, media changes are not detected (tried blank
cd-r, audio cd, dvd-rom)

Actual Results:
Media sensing in cd/dvd drives no longer works

Expected Results:
Continue to function as in the 0.6x,0.9x versions.

cd/dvd drives are (ide, primary controller, masters)
running both gentoo-sources-2.6.18-r3 and suspend2-sources-2.6.18

It's cause hal-0.5.8 and hal-0.5.8.1 are TOTALLY broken. Those versions are entirely unpatched and unsupported. We're fixing up the 0.5.7 versions to work.

genstef, you committed hal-0.5.8 and insist it be there... you deal with this.
Comment 2 G. Baum 2006-12-22 16:01:02 UTC
Just to weigh in on using hal-0.5.8.x:

I'm using it because I want/need luks supported automounting - this is supported in Ubuntu and maybe some other distributions. I was suprised that Gentoo still didn't have this as part of the standard distribution. It took some fair amount of time researching, to find the udev rules and hal scripts that needed to be changed to make it work.

Once issues with 0.5.8 are resolved (or changes supporting luks encrypted devices are added to 0.5.7.x) I was going to put together a tutorial or some overlay ebuilds to support this.

Let me know what I can do to help resolve this bug.

Well currently your using a version of HAL that's unsupported. Only genstef is supporting it and clearly not too much since he hasn't weighed in here. It works for me and everyone else that tries it with a sane version of HAL and with the current D-Bus.

And honestly, I couldn't care less if Ubuntu or whatever distro has it. We do this as volunteer work towards open source improve the community. There's no one breathing down my neck to complete something. If you want a feature, scratch the itch and contribute back to the community. In fact, I'm answering this on a computer at my family's house since it is 3 days before Christmas...

genstef... fix this.

honestly I dont care much and will most likely not be much help to any of you. G, complain upstream please

and if cardoe wants he can remove the hated hal from the overlay. Dont have it checked out currently myself to do it
