Hi, http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-mips.xml?part=1&chap=2 mentions that SGI machines require a "MiniDIN8 --> RS-232 serial cable". That's not true. My SGI Octane has an ordinary PC compatible serial port. Jens
CCing the MIPS team for review, help, etc. You guys have any comments? :)
(In reply to comment #1) > CCing the MIPS team for review, help, etc. You guys have any comments? :) > It seems pretty nit-picky to bother filing bugs for things which anyone who has a shred of common sense could figure out, but whatever. Redhatter is our docs man...up to him.
CCing redhatter instead.
Some SGI machines do. Namely the Indigo2, Indy, Challenge S and other machines of a similar age. The O2, Octane/Octane2, and possibly Origin200/2000, have more modern DB9 connectors. The obvious lesson here, is to look at the back of your machine, and decide whether this statement applies to you or not. :-) As such, I don't see much point in changing the docs here.
Indeed, some SGI machine have a DB9 port and other have a MiniDin8 one. The document contains: "Note: SGI machines use a MiniDIN 8 connector for the serial ports." Why not just pretend a "Some"? It's trivial, proper and correct in contrast to the current text.
