If I comment out the Load "GLX" line in /etc/X11/xorg.conf then X starts, albeit without any GLX support. With GLX enabled (i.e. the state it was in prior to the XOrg upgrade) the X server doesn't even get as far as the NVidia logo - it produces a screen full of garbage and then shuts down. ==== Portage 2.1.1-r2 (default-linux/x86/2006.0, gcc-3.3.6, glibc-2.3.6-r4, 2.6.10-gentoo-r6 i686) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.10-gentoo-r6 i686 AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2800+ Gentoo Base System version 1.12.4 Last Sync: Fri, 15 Dec 2006 02:00:01 +0000 app-admin/eselect-compiler: [Not Present] dev-java/java-config: 1.2.11-r1 dev-lang/python: 2.3.5-r2, 2.4.3-r1 dev-python/pycrypto: 2.0.1-r5 dev-util/ccache: [Not Present] dev-util/confcache: [Not Present] sys-apps/sandbox: 1.2.17 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.59-r7 sys-devel/automake: 1.4_p6, 1.5, 1.6.3, 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.9.6-r2 sys-devel/binutils: 2.16.1-r3 sys-devel/gcc-config: 1.3.13-r4 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.22 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.17-r1 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CBUILD="i386-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-O2 -mcpu=i686 -fomit-frame-pointer -march=athlon-xp -pipe" CHOST="i386-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/3.4/env /usr/kde/3.4/share/config /usr/kde/3.4/shutdown /usr/kde/3.5/env /usr/kde/3.5/share/config /usr/kde/3.5/shutdown /usr/share/X11/xkb /usr/share/config /usr/share/texmf/dvipdfm/config/ /usr/share/texmf/dvips/config/ /usr/share/texmf/tex/generic/config/ /usr/share/texmf/tex/platex/config/ /usr/share/texmf/xdvi/" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/env.d /etc/gconf /etc/revdep-rebuild /etc/terminfo" CXXFLAGS="-O2 -mcpu=i686 -fomit-frame-pointer -march=athlon-xp -pipe" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoconfig distlocks metadata-transfer sandbox sfperms strict" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://distfiles.gentoo.org http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/gentoo" MAKEOPTS="-j2" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_RSYNC_OPTS="--recursive --links --safe-links --perms --times --compress --force --whole-file --delete --delete-after --stats --timeout=180 --exclude='/distfiles' --exclude='/local' --exclude='/packages'" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage" SYNC="rsync://engels/gentoo-portage" USE="x86 3dnow 3dnowex X aac alsa alsa_cards_intel8x0 apache2 apm arts audiofile berkdb bitmap-fonts cdparanoia cdr cli cpudetection cracklib crypt cups dba dga directfb divx4linux dlloader double-precision dri dvd dvdread eds elibc_glibc emboss encode esd fastcgi flash foomaticdb fortran gd gdbm gif gnome gpm gstreamer gtk gtk2 iconv imlib input_devices_joystick input_devices_keyboard input_devices_mouse ipv6 isdnlog joystick jpeg jpeg2k kde kernel_linux libg++ libwww mad mikmod mmx mmx2 motif mozsvg mp3 mpeg mpm-worker mysql ncurses nls nptl nvidia offensive ogg opengl oss pam pcre perl php png pppd python qt qt3 qt4 quicktime rdesktop readline reflection sdl session spell spl sql sqlite3 sse ssl subversion tcpd tiff truetype truetype-fonts type1-fonts udev userland_GNU video_cards_fbdev video_cards_nv video_cards_nvidia video_cards_vesa video_cards_vga vorbis win32codecs xcomposite xml xorg xscreensaver xv yaz zlib" Unset: CTARGET, EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS, INSTALL_MASK, LANG, LC_ALL, LDFLAGS, LINGUAS, PORTAGE_RSYNC_EXTRA_OPTS
Created attachment 104143 [details] /etc/X11/xorg.conf This is in the working configuration - with "Load GLX" commented out.

Attach /var/log/Xorg.0.log; the output of nvidia-bug-report.sh and post exact drivers version. Reopen then.

I've attached the nvidia-bug-report.log and Xorg.0.log. Apologies for the duped upload, I thought the transfer had stalled. I'm using NVidia driver version 1.0.963 with udev 103.
<snip> NVRM: not using NVAGP, an AGPGART backend is loaded! </snip> Remove the following line from xorg.conf: Option "NvAGP" "1" Anyway, your hardware is apparently not sane, kernel is spewing tons of error messages about your CPU.
The Xorg.log is not useful, need to check the one from crashed Xorg. Anyway, we can't debug broken hardware, sorry.
For prosperity - the Xorg.0.log *was* from the crashed server, the removal of the NvAGP line didn't fix it and the non-fatal MCE errors are a known, ignorable problem. I'll try the forums. :(
