Doing a new cold install from LiveCD 2006.0. Installation http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=1&chap=7 (Code Listing 20: Emerging and enabling coldplug) instructions say to emerge coldplug, which blocks udev updates. Udev > 103 includes coldplug functionality. Installation page needs a note like what is in http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/udev-guide.xml (Code Listing 2.4: Adding coldplug to the boot runlevel). Once the LiveCD udev goes > 103, the note is no longer necessary.
(In reply to comment #0) > Doing a new cold install from LiveCD 2006.0. For starters, you need to be using the latest installation media. We don't support installations of 2006.1 tarballs with anything except 2006.1 liveCDs; we don't guarantee that you can mix and match media releases and expect to get a working system. That being said, I'll take a look at adding a note about this udev problem. I added <notes> to all other guides that mention coldplug, but it looks like the handbook was left out.
Added a modified version of the coldplug/udev blurb found in other guides to the networked handbooks that cover coldplug. Note that there's no point in adding the same <note> to the networkless handbooks, since they're using an old Portage snapshot that doesn't include udev 103. Thanks for reporting, fixed in CVS.
