if you have set USE flags for truetype and iconv at the same time, you end up with
no /usr/share/mplayer/fonts or whatsoever

Forgot to tell that its for the media-video/mplayer-1.0_rc1.

expected behaviour, you are supposed to use the much better truetype fonts (and the default config has a more or less good configuration for it)

The bitmap fonts are deprecated by upstream.
