Else htdig is not capable of indexing https URLs.
You can easily achieve this by adding the --with-ssl flag in the econf section of the htdig ebuild, but I'd prefer to have a USE flag for this, too. Not sure about the dependencies though, perhaps it needs OpenSSL for this(?).
