Description Marco Lazzeri 2006-11-13 12:03:09 UTC
I tried using nvidia-drivers-1.0.9742.ebuild and nvidia-drivers-1.0.9629.ebuild. But, after every installation, 'startx' crashed with the following error message:

0: X(xf86SigHandler+0x85) [0x80cbe18]

After some digging with the nVidia people, we found that using the official installation from www.nvidia.com fixes the problem.

I attach the output of 'nvidia-bug-report.sh' and the installation log from the official installation wizard.

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild   R   ] x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-1.0.9742  USE="dlloader" 0 kB

Total: 1 package (1 reinstall), Size of downloads: 0 kB

As you can probably guess, it works perfectly for me. What *exactly* is different between the official install and an ebuild install that you think is causing this issue? Is there a missed library or something?
Comment 5 Marco Lazzeri 2006-11-14 07:07:00 UTC
I could try to guess: some new nVidia installer steps that the ebuild doesn't perform?

Or perhaps this, from the installation log:

"""
-> Validating previous installation:
-> Unable to access previously installed file
   '/lib/modules/2.6.16-gentoo-r9/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia.ko' (No such file
   or directory).
"""

Your /usr/src/linux symlink is not pointing to your currently running kernel. Please correct the issue and retest with a newer nvidia-drivers version.
