If I start ddd it just hangs forever (the same happens if started on a binary) and uses 100% of CPU time. It's quite an odd "hanging" since I can still move and select menu options (apart from File/Open and File/Run. Quitting ddd pops up a message that gdb is still busy. Running just gdb on the other hand works just fine. revdep-rebuild doesn't show up any package at all. thanks for your effort. # emerge --info Portage 2.1.1-r1 (default-linux/x86/2006.1, gcc-4.1.1, glibc-2.4-r4, 2.6.17.6 i686) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.17.6 i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.40GHz Gentoo Base System version 1.12.6 Last Sync: Fri, 10 Nov 2006 01:47:01 +0000 ccache version 2.3 [enabled] app-admin/eselect-compiler: [Not Present] dev-java/java-config: [Not Present] dev-lang/python: 2.4.3-r4 dev-python/pycrypto: 2.0.1-r5 dev-util/ccache: 2.3 dev-util/confcache: [Not Present] sys-apps/sandbox: 1.2.17 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.60 sys-devel/automake: 1.4_p6, 1.5, 1.6.3, 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.9.6-r2 sys-devel/binutils: 2.16.1-r3 sys-devel/gcc-config: 1.3.13-r4 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.22 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.17-r1 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CBUILD="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-march=pentium4 -Os -pipe" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/3.5/env /usr/kde/3.5/share/config /usr/kde/3.5/shutdown /usr/share/X11/xkb /usr/share/config" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/env.d /etc/gconf /etc/revdep-rebuild /etc/splash /etc/terminfo" CXXFLAGS="-march=pentium4 -Os -pipe" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoconfig buildpkg ccache distlocks metadata-transfer nostrip parallel-fetch sandbox sfperms strict" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://mirror.switch.ch/ftp/mirror/gentoo/ http://gentoo.mirror.solnet.ch http://www.gtlib.gatech.edu/pub/gentoo" LANG="POSIX" MAKEOPTS="-j2" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_RSYNC_OPTS="--recursive --links --safe-links --perms --times --compress --force --whole-file --delete --delete-after --stats --timeout=180 --exclude='/distfiles' --exclude='/local' --exclude='/packages'" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.europe.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="x86 X alsa bash-completion berkdb bitmap-fonts cli cracklib crypt cscope cups dlloader dri elibc_glibc gdbm gif gpm gtk+ hardened iconv input_devices_evdev input_devices_keyboard input_devices_mouse ipv6 isdnlog kde kernel_linux libg++ ncurses nls nptl nptlonly ntpl nv nvidia oracle pam pcre perforce perl pic ppds pppd python qt3 readline reflection samba session spl ssl syslog tcpd truetype-fonts type1-fonts udev unicode userland_GNU video_cards_nv video_cards_nvidia xinerama xorg zlib" Unset: CTARGET, EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS, INSTALL_MASK, LC_ALL, LDFLAGS, LINGUAS, PORTAGE_RSYNC_EXTRA_OPTS

emerge strace and then run ddd in the strace, see if you can see what it's doing while running... I can't reproduce this here.
Created attachment 102141 [details] strace ddd log The first 20seconds of ddd running without any arguments. I cut 13Mb of data repeating lines similar to rt_sigaction(SIGINT, {SIG_IGN}, {0x80b15e6, [INT], SA_RESTART}, 8) = 0 rt_sigaction(SIGQUIT, {SIG_IGN}, {0x80b15c4, [QUIT], SA_RESTART}, 8) = 0 rt_sigaction(SIGHUP, {SIG_IGN}, {0x80b15c4, [HUP], SA_RESTART}, 8) = 0 waitpid(9130, 0xbfbf6f64, WNOHANG) = 0 rt_sigaction(SIGINT, {0x80b15e6, [INT], SA_RESTART}, {SIG_IGN}, 8) = 0 rt_sigaction(SIGQUIT, {0x80b15c4, [QUIT], SA_RESTART}, {SIG_IGN}, 8) = 0 rt_sigaction(SIGHUP, {0x80b15c4, [HUP], SA_RESTART}, {SIG_IGN}, 8) = 0 ioctl(3, FIONREAD, [0]) = 0 poll([{fd=6, events=POLLIN|POLLPRI}, {fd=9, events=POLLIN|POLLPRI}], 2, 0) = 0 gettimeofday({1163705122, 695849}, NULL) = 0

Issue solved. A script set CC to "g++" and it looks like I was emerging packages during un update using g++ instead of gcc for C files. After unsetting CC and recompiling the system I'm back on track.
