If you try to specifically install tcl-8.3.4, you get an error at configure time: $ emerge =tcl-8.3.4 [...] >>> Source unpacked. >>> Compiling source in /var/tmp/portage/tcl-8.3.4/work/tcl8.3.4 ... [...] checking if 64bit Sparc VIS support is requested... no checking system version (for dynamic loading)... ./configure: line 6032: syntax error near unexpected token `)' ./configure: line 6032: ` OSF*)' !!! ERROR: dev-lang/tcl-8.3.4 failed. This appears to be a bug induced by a change in the way bash parses commands. [1] describes the problem, including information on how to fix it. I suggest a patch be applied to tcl as there as some applications still need tcl-8.3.* to work, unfortunately, apparently including emc [2]. Whatever junk that depends on tcl-8.3.4 needs to removed from the tree (for stuff that's not in portage, sorry but it's not our problem).
Recycling for removal request.
dev-lang/{tcl,tk}-8.3.4 is borked w/ >=bash-3.1, it outdated like hell and generally sucks goats nuts, plus there's exactly one ebuild that depends on it in the whole tree. $ sudo pquery --expr "and(revdep('<dev-lang/tcl-8.4'),not(revdep('>=dev-lang/tcl-8.4')))" dev-lang/tk-8.3.4-r1 media-sound/rat-4.2.23 $ sudo pquery --expr "and(revdep('<dev-lang/tk-8.4'),not(revdep('>=dev-lang/tk-8.4')))" media-sound/rat-4.2.23 Please, clean up the corpses.

(In reply to comment #5) > Please suggest an alternative to switch to before nuking. Uhm? How about media-sound/rat-4.2.25? Or feel free to submit an ebuild for something newer - https://frostie.cs.ucl.ac.uk/mbone/mmedia/wiki/RatDownload
(In reply to comment #6) > How about media-sound/rat-4.2.25? Yay, sorry, I thought you wanted to punt all the siblings.
Gone. R.I.P.
