Description Francois Chenier 2006-11-11 02:04:00 UTC
With Gnome 2.16 (I dunno if it's an issue with older versions), I have no sound when I start pingus from Main menu or from a Shortcut but this game works fine (with sound) when I start it from gnome-terminal.

Tell me if you need my "emerge --info" (not sure it will be revelant for this bug). Weird problem noticed with ...

pingus-0.6.0-r1
alsa-lib-1.0.13
esound-0.2.36-r2
vanilla-sources-2.6.19_rc5 (AC'97 stuff compiled in the kernel)
& naturally I don't have ArTS installed on my laptop.

Have you tried to kill esd before launch pingus, it seems a gnome problem :-/

You got it. When you have ...

belgix   15579  0.0  0.3   3752  1584 ?        Ss   08:44   0:00 /usr/bin/esd -terminate -nobeeps -as 2 -d default -unix -spawnfd 24

... in your process list, sounds doesn't work when pingus is launched from a shortcut but works fine when is lauched from a gnome-session. Killing the process restore the functionality. The esound daemon can be restarted thereafter without any side effect. Just one more bug with this (fundamentally broken) esound daemon! Thanks.

I cannot reproduce this problem:
pacho    23000  0.0  0.1   3220  1492 ?        Ss   13:36   0:00 /usr/bin/esd -terminate -nobeeps -as 2 -spawnfd 21
pacho    23195  0.0  0.0   2108   832 pts/0    S+   13:39   0:00 grep --colour=auto esd

Please, check your esd configuration, my /etc/esd/esd.conf:
[esd]
auto_spawn=1
spawn_options=-terminate -nobeeps -as 2
spawn_wait_ms=100
# default options are used in spawned and non-spawned mode
default_options=

Make sure that, when you logout your gnome session, no esd process is alive, if esd is still running, kill it from a console.

Also, upgrade your system properly:
emerge --sync
emerge -avuDN World
revdep-rebuild
dispatch-conf
