I've gotten nvidia driver 1.0.9629 to load just fine but it has a lot of horizontal line noise that dances around the screen.  This noise isn't minor, it completely dominates the screen and makes text almost impossible to read -- much like what running a CRT at too high a frequency does.

I have a 6800GT card using DVI-D output.

x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-1.0.8776
or earlier versions have always worked just fine.

So report it to nVidia, we can't fix it.

This is related to DVI configuration changes that nVidia made from the 8xxx series to the 9xxx series of the drivers. Please read the nVidia README with the drivers and update your configuration accordingly.
