I also did an Ebuild for the Gentoo Iconset, but I don't bother to submit it as yours does actually the same. But: I chose /usr/share/gentoo/icons as location for installing the icons, because I was thinking this would be a good place for other gentoo-specific artwork, e.g. themes go into /usr/share/gentoo/themes. Maybe just a matter of taste.
/usr/share/pixmaps/gentoo is even a better place, perhaps. /usr/share/icons has the gnome-themes icon sets. I was thinking it would be possible, invoking gimp in batch mode, to programmatically convert one of the gnome icon sets to be gentoo-ized, using the template that comes with the tarball. Also there is the problem that the tarball is presently unversioned. Hopefully that will change at some point in the future.
OK, The icons have been resized to 64x64, 48x48 and 32x32. The icons have been rolled into the media-gfx/gentoo-artwork ebuild (currently ~ masked). The icons install to: /usr/share/icons/gentoo/<size> The gentoo-artwork ebuild also contains some pixmaps and a couple of grub splash screens. Because the icons don't cover the full range of images required for either KDE or GNOME (and because my artwork skills suck) the icons are not installed as an icon "theme".
