With the newest packages, compiz runs very slowly, probably because of http://www.nabble.com/Fix-xserver-build-t2413284.html. (Using gentoo-sources 2.6.17-r8, modular xorg, radeon 7000, however the bug is said to be present on all graphics drivers and most distributions). imho xorg and aiglx is horribly broken at the moment. >>>>> glxinfo snippets libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x4b OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Radeon 20060327 AGP 1x x86/MMX+/3DNow!+/SSE TCL OpenGL version string: 1.3 Mesa 6.5.1 0x4b 32 tc 0 32 0 r . . 8 8 8 8 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 Ncon

(In reply to comment #0) > With the newest packages, compiz runs very slowly, probably because of You'll have to be more specific than this - what versions of compiz, xorg-server, mesa, and xf86-video-ati?
After remerging xorg-server, libdrm, mesa several times in several versions, with the newest stable versions the slowness was solved, but beryl-manager (0.1.1) still does not start and glxinfo is still the same compiz-0.2.0 beryl-0.1.1 xorg-server-1.1.1-r1 mesa-6.5.1-r1 xf86-video-ati-6.6.3
That glxinfo output is fine. If compiz works, then X should be properly configured to run something like beryl as well. Re-assigning to Josh J. for the beryl issue.
are you running another window manager at the time you try and start beryl? I've only seen compiz: Failed to manage screen: 0 compiz: No manageable screens found on display :0.0 when there is another window manager running, or you are trying to control a different display then you are actually on. check what $DISPLAY defines as its current display to ensure that its actually :0 and not :1 or some other window.
I start it the same way and at the same time I start compiz-aiglx, which works. And on the other gentoo pc with an nvidia graphics card, it works, too. I'll check it again later today.
After some random fiddling, it works (mostly), but don't ask me why. Sometimes beryl-manager starts emerald twice, and the two instances start a war on each other, that's the only problem left.
The double emerald start is fixed in 0.1.2 IIRC.
should hopefully be fixed in 0.1.2 in the tree in a few hours, reopen in case its not
