/etc/udev/rules.d/11-hplj10xx.rules creates device node with mode 0666. May be it is better to create device with mode 0660 and group lp (as it does default udev rule for printer)?
Created attachment 101330 [details, diff] /etc/udev/rules.d/11-hplj10xx.rules patch I've prepared patch to create device node with correct mode and group. I hope it will useful.
Just an FYI, I've provided an updated foo2zjs-20061201.ebuild here: http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=156875 I don't seem to be experiencing the problem you're having with device permission. I think this is probably because I'm using network rather then plugging the printer into a usb port. ;-) So, if you are having a permission problem, instead of chmod 0666 and letting everyone access. Why not something like 0660 and marking the group file on the device file as "lp" or "lpadmin"??
thanks, fixed in foo2zjs bumped to 20061130
