Description Dan Noe 2003-02-10 00:16:57 UTC
Prior to gnome2.2 update, gnome-terminal had a nice "fixed" font that was easy
to read and small and not antialiased. Now, I cannot read the text in the
terminals at all because fixed isn't listed, and all the fonts are tiny and
antialiased. This is unacceptable; I've had to use xterm instead.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Start gnome terminal
2. Look at screen...
3. ...

Actual Results:
Everything was antialiased, unreadable, and tiny.

Expected Results:
My .fonts.conf has antialiasing turned off for all fonts below size 14. It
works as expected in mozilla, but gnome simply ignores the settings.

Make sure you don't have other font configuration files in your home that gnome may use
Comment 2 Dan Noe 2003-02-10 09:33:52 UTC
Well, this is no longer particularly critical in any way because I've switched to aterm indefinitely. Just.. still very frustrating, and I have another machine with the same problem I'd really like to have gnome-terminal work on.

What other font configuration files would be in my ~home? As far as I can tell, .fonts.conf is the only one, but I'm not exactly sure what I'm looking for.

about the fixed fonts : vte (pango) doesn't support them.

how did they do it in debian then?
there is gnome 2.2 with vte available in sid, and it's possible
to use fixed fonts in it.

my mistake, seems that pcf fonts do work, but theyre all zipped and not all of our freetype/fontconfig/xft supports that. What version of named packs do you have ?
Comment 6 Artur Brodowski 2003-02-10 16:59:33 UTC
[ebuild R ] media-libs/freetype-2.1.2-r2
[ebuild R ] x11-libs/xft-2.0.1
[ebuild R ] media-libs/fontconfig-2.1
i even tried to force USE_GDK_XFT=0 and run gnome-terminal,
but nothing changed (afair it did work for some 2.1.x series)

Hmm, I got fixed to appear in gnome-terminal by following some directions online:

http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gtk-i18n-list/2002-October/msg00015.html

However, despite my "don't antialias below 16pt" setting in both fonts.conf and Xftconfig, Fixed/12pt still is clearly antialiased. Its readable on a CRT, but on my laptop it isn't readable at all.

freetype 2.1.3 has support for gzip'ed pcf fonts, which should solve the first problem of not being able to load fixed. although it is currently only available in unstable.

if you are using fontconfig and Xft2, then XftConfig will most likely not be honoured. you should make the changes in /etc/fonts/fonts.conf or your own local ~/.fonts.conf

i assume you are setting your rules to something similar the first entry in this page to get aa disabled for font sizes below 16pt:

i'm not sure if this is still an issue. i use gnome-teminal 2.2.1 with
vte 0.11.0 (not yet in portage) and it displayes unaliased fixed font
just fine, see here:

i think this is all past problems with the introduction of freetype-2.1.4 ?

can you confirm ?

i assume everyone silently agrees, closing
