Playing bzflag reproducibly freezes my system after a (random) while. In one instance bzflag freezes but the system seems at least partially OK (mouse moves, ping works, but switching to a tty with alt-ctrl-F* didn't work, nor alt-ctr-backspace). In another the system was hard locked -not answering to ping. /var/log/messages however didn't report anything odd. Invariably the freeze occurs at the very start of a new game turn after having been killed -just when the tank lands on the map, with the red screen. Briefly, my system is an x86 system (Athlon AMD Duron), compiled with gcc 3.4.6.
