The panel applet gnome-extra/deskbar-applet-2.16 does not provide the search plugins of the firefox browser in its action list anymore, after mozilla-firefox has been updated to www-client/mozilla-firefox-2.0. Re-emerging deskbar-applet did not help. Probably some incompatible interface?

This seems to be a result of the change to the new opensearch plugin-standard in Firefox 2.0. The deskbar people are on the way to implement that...

People from the deskbar team have updated the deskbar, at least in the CVS. I have added an ebuild and a patch for those who (like me) want to recover this feature. Thanks to masterdriverz for all the help!

The fix is in upstream since version 2.17.5. The version in portage with the fix is currently 2.18.1.
