imlib2 won't emerge because it complains no freetype is available 
checking for TT_Init_FreeType in -lttf... no 
i have freetype 2.1.3 installed.

do you have freetype 1 installed as well ? It's probably looking for the wrong lib or something.

you know.. portage said i had freetype 1.3 installed as well as 2.1.3. 
But i decided to re-emerge 1.3 and voila! 
problem solved thanks.

looks ok in the ebuild, so shouldve been there. closing.
