new install on a PIII, 512M, IDE (1 HD,1 CD,1 floppy). Did stage 1,2,3, compile 
without issue, reboot, got the splash image, press enter, start to run the 
kernel and then got this:
Ds : no socket drivers loaded!
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:03
this pc run RH for two years before.

It seems like you have forgotten something in your kernel config.
Please check, that you have support for your filesystems, and that you have IDE support enabled.

also make sure your boot entry in grub.conf is correct

honestly, it seems like you misconfigured your kernel

I've re-installed from scratch and it's working fine now. Still have an issue with X11 but don't dig that too much as I don't really need it on that server.
