I'm using the livecd-basic-x86-2003011400.iso image to install gentoo on a Compaq Evo n1015v. It's a mobile Athlon XP box w/a mobile radeon card and a DVD/CDRW combo drive. I get to the part where I select a keymap. It loads the keymap. It then tries to mount the CD but fails: ---Mounting the CD mount: Mounting /newroot/dev/cdroms/cdrom0 on /newroot/mnt/cdrom failed: Invalid argument ---CD not found umount: /newroot: Device or resource busy. Then I get dropped into BusyBox. It says: sh: can't access tty; job control turn off (probably not relevant, but included just in case). I tried mounting /newroot/dev/cdroms/cdrom0 on /newroot/mnt/cdrom at the busybox prompt, but I still get the invalid argument error. The same thing happened when I tried mounting /newroot/dev/cdroms/cdrom0 on /blah. There's nothing wrong with the CD. I used it to install gentoo on my inspiron 8100 yesterday. I just tried my Gentoo 1.2 CD. It has the same problem when mounting the CD-ROM. It's output is a bit more verbose: hdc: ATAPI reset complete hdc: status error: status = 0x20 { DeviceFault } end_requesr: I/O error dev 16:00 (hdc), sector 0 ...(The above is repeated a few times.) mount: Mounting /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 on /mnt/cdrom failed: Invalid argument If someone can give me a pointer in the right direction, I can investigate more closely. Thanks much, Arun
I also have this problem on a home-made system. It is an all-SCSI set-up, with the quicker SCSI controller using an LSI Logic (formerly SymBIOS Logic) 53C1010 chipset and the slower SCSI controller using an Initio chipset. The start-up seems to find the Initio-based adapter. It then looks for a QLogic adapter (of which there are none). It then prompts me for my keyboard configuration, to which I reply "uk". After that it drops into a shell, with a message about being unable to mount the CD-ROM. Be aware that there is a Plextor CD-ROM, a Nakamichi 5-CD changer, which presents itself as 5 CD-ROM and a Panasonic DVD-RAM drive all connected to the LSI Logic SCSI card. There is also a Hewlett Packard CD-RW drive connected to the Initio-based SCSI card. Any of these is capable of reading the CD-R that contains the 1.4rc3 bootstrap, and would present itself has having CD-ROM capability if asked. I am using the Plextor CD-ROM, which has the lowest SCSI id of all of these, to boot the installer because it is the fastest of these drives. I will try again tomorrow after re-cabling these to operate through the Initio-based SCSI controller. [It simply might not be seeing the LSI Logic adapter for some reason.]
Re-cabling the CD-ROM to the Initio controller did the job. It seems the problem is that the software is not recognizing the LSI Logic controller.
