Description offe.holmgren 2006-10-18 05:09:33 UTC
Hi!

Upon doing an emerge -avu world, portage grabs (among other things)
xorg-server-1.1.1-r1 but fails the emerge. I have been to the forums
but was advised to open a bug for it.

URL to the forum thread:
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-508125.html?sid=456c4d5d30a45649d646a20df760b3af

I have now tried emerging with autoconf 2.59, autoconf 2.60 and then
reverted back to 2.59 since that's the stable one. I have tried to emerge
autoconf 2.60, m4 and xtrans with FEATURES="test" as advised in the forum
thread, but it didn't help.

The "steps to reproduce" for me are:
1. emerge -av xorg-server

Below I have included all of the information as suggested in the forum thread.
I hope you guys can make something of it.

What version of xtrans do you have installed? Try running 'emerge -1 xtrans' and trying again.
Comment 2 offe.holmgren 2006-10-18 08:28:25 UTC
I've got xtrans-1.0.1. I have re-emerged it several times now,
and 'emerge -1 xtrans' didn't help. And I did a --sync before emerging
as well, just in case something had gotten updated.
Comment 3 offe.holmgren 2006-10-20 07:01:27 UTC
I just tried re-emerging xorg-server-1.0.2-r7 and that fails in exactly
the same way. Since that emerged fine sometime long ago, I suppose I must
have broken something somewhere. I still have no idea of how to fix it, though...
Comment 4 Joshua Baergen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-10-20 07:38:35 UTC
Try re-emerging util-macros, though I doubt that's the problem.

If that doesn't work, you can always try the sledgehammer approach of 'emerge -e xorg-x11' - it should bring your system back into a state of consistency.
Comment 5 offe.holmgren 2006-10-20 13:08:01 UTC
Re-emerging util-macros didn't work. I tried to "emerge -ave xorg-x11"
but that actually doesnt work either. This time automake fails when trying
to emerge xorg-docs-1.2:

* Running automake --add-missing --copy --foreign ...                             [ !! ]

The log file reported above conatins the following:

***** automake *****

sgml/Makefile.am:41: BUILD_LINUXDOC does not appear in AM_CONDITIONAL
sgml/Makefile.am:44: BUILD_PDFDOC does not appear in AM_CONDITIONAL

Seems as if my system is more broken than it seemed. Anyway, I'll try
the real sledgehammer approach of doing an "emerge -ave world". If that fails
to, I'll scream!
Comment 6 Joshua Baergen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-10-20 21:01:02 UTC
'emerge -e world' will likely fail the same way. Doing something like 'USE="-X" emerge -e system' might at least get your system rebuild.

This smells a bit like a configuration file issue, which unfortunately may be a bit tricky to track down. Perhaps do a double-check of /etc/env.d for any offending variables.
Comment 7 Christian H. Kuhn 2006-10-23 01:49:35 UTC
Solved; the problem was not related to xorg-server, but came from a strange /etc/env.d/02locale. Sorry for inconveniences.

Are you offe.holmgren@gmail.com? :P
Comment 9 offe.holmgren 2006-10-23 08:55:13 UTC
Well, I'm glad someone got it fixed, but for me it's still broken :-).
Doing "emerge -ave system" doesn't work either. It breaks on some other
package than xorg-server, but I forgot to note which and to find out I'd
have to try again and it takes forever before it breaks.

Anyway, this seems to be related to my system being severly broken all of a
sudden. I'm actually thinking about doing my first reinstall since I first
installed gentoo years ago. I don't really know what else to do.

Should this bug be closed since it seems to be caused by my system being broken
or should I just leave it open and report back when/if I actually solve this thing?
Comment 10 Joshua Baergen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-10-25 14:18:02 UTC
We'll close it for now, but please re-open it if the issue still occurs.

'emerge -e system' death is definitely bad. If you do choose to reinstall, don't keep most of your old configuration, especially env.d files. You'll have to add your changes manually and piece-by-piece in case you encounter the problem again.
