Description Jozsef Daniel 2006-10-17 10:12:56 UTC
I emerged the new, stable xorg 7.1 packages, and found - rather dumbstruck - that I can't play videos. Mplayer and Totem both kill X upon starting a video stream. The output of the X server was basically of no use - it didn't state anything besides that it crashed due to an unhandled exception in the nvidia driver.

I'm reinstalling xorg-server-1.0.1 right now, and will post the results.
Comment 1 Jozsef Daniel 2006-10-17 10:31:49 UTC
Just as expected, no problems with Xorg 7.0.
Also, Xorg 7.1 was SLOOOOW as hell in comparison. I think marking it stable was too early.

We can't fix nVidia drivers at all, and you didn't post any info to actually diagnose the problem. I have no problem with playing video in Xorg 7.1, reopen with some steps to reproduce, error message, emerge --info etc. etc. etc.

Comment 3 Jozsef Daniel 2007-01-24 17:23:01 UTC
Okay, I experimented a bit, and found the exact steps to reproduce the error.
Hardware: amd64, nVidia Quadro FX 4000 video
Emerge >=x11-base/xorg-server-1.1* with any version of nvidia-driver

In xorg.conf, in the Section of the video adapter, set:
Option "Overlay" "true"

(and of course load extmod, as that provides Xv)

Now, try to use any Xv based output, like mplayer. The X server will instantly die.

As this error wasn't present in earlier Xorg versions, it may be related to a bug in the nvidia drivers, but is basically an xorg-xserver bug.

I also tried setting Option "XvMCUsesTextures" "true", which, according to the documentation, forces the use of the 3d accelerator for video overlay instead of the hardware overlay. It doesn't change a thing.

still not convinced it's not a configuration issue. You didn't state what versions of the nvidia-drivers you used were. Post your whole xorg.conf

I've also never enabled Overlay on my system and it just works.
