Description delta407 2003-02-05 09:32:47 UTC
When the LiveCD probes for mass storage controllers, the computer goes to a black screen and stops responding to user input. After booting with the noscsi option, I loaded each module, and it killed my box when it reached eata.o. I'm not entirely sure what extra hardware this box has (bought it used yesterday), but it has the Dell onboard SCSI, a Dell Remote Assistant Card, and (I think) an OEM Dell RAID controller covered by the 'aacraid' driver.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Boot without the 'noscsi' option or `insmod /modules/storage/eata.o`
Actual Results:
It hung.

Expected Results:
Not hang.

Suggestions:
 - When the LiveCD can't find itself, it starts a shell without doing anything but showing a prompt. Perhaps a "If you need to load any storage drivers, do so and then type `exit` to continue." should be included?
 - The 'cdcache' boot option is *really cool* but is not documented in the list of options. (The isolinux 'F2 on boot' thing, that is.) Please record it in the boot options, and perhaps make it the default if the amount of RAM is greater than some amount -- say, 384 MB.
 - Could there be a boot option to load a specific module rather than probing? The current workaround is to say 'noscsi' and insmod yourself, but appending something like 'autoload=aic7xxx' would be nice.
 - Perhaps eata.o should be removed from the auto-probe list if it makes this configuration -- and likely others -- die on insertion?

Okay, here's the other related information. /proc/pci shows two Adaptec 7890s (which I think are embedded in the motherboard, but I don't have docs) and a DEC 21554, which the POST says is a "PowerEdge Expandable RAID Controller 2". This RAID controller, however, has a AAC-9000MD daughterboard, which is somehow related to the AAC-364 (supported under aacraid). I can see the CD-ROM (on one of the 7890s) and the disk array (via aacraid, which correctly sees the card), so I'm not dead in the water -- it's just that the LiveCD doesn't sit well with this configuration. :)

I'm having strange problems getting network access right now, but at least it boots up, so I can get you whatever information you need.

Argh! The kernel on the LiveCD just gave me an Oops while setting everything up remotely. Would it be possible to include a similar vanilla kernel as well as the patched one on the LiveCD? (i.e. type 'vanilla noscsi cdcache' instead of 'gentoo noscsi cdcache')

please try latest livecd
it has 2 kernels also, gentoo and smp
