There is a comment about a pdf version "being developed", and some comments about how if instead of creating a whole handbook with all the sections for each platoform (like they did for html), they created a pdf for all the combinations of possible optional sections, it would be "wasting resources". However this comment was posted over a year ago, and after a year of checking, i thought it was time I create a "report" :) pdf versions are important because when html documents are printed, they cannot have table of contests with valid page numbers. I.E. if it's large, you can't navigate in a printed copy of a html document. Anyway, if the concern is the space required for the platform specific pdfs, then one could make a "gentoo-handbook" ebuild that downloads the sources and prints it for your platform. (and installs all the dependancies for the text utils (i tried to download and compile it myself and was unable to figure what all text utils i was supposed to have installed)). It could even be one platform independant ebuild that would make itself platform specific by grepping /etc/make.conf for "CHOST" before compiling the document. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.emerge search handbook 2. 3. Actual Results: nothing returned Expected Results: it would have been nice if it had said "gentoo-handbook-2006.1" :)
PDFs are available on the release media for each arch. There is a printable, all-in-one version of the handbook, as well as a few styles of hyperlinked sectioned handbooks. the idea of documentation ebuilds is an old one -- won't happen. too many changes happen for ebuilds ever to make it out of package.mask until the doc in question is far too outdated. ebuilds can't keep up with the frequency of changes.
