Lame version 3.97 has been released:
http://lame.sourceforge.net/index.php

It includes many bugfixes over the previous stable version 3.96.1:

An ebuild would be great!

*removed WANT_AUTOCONF="latest" ,fixed in this versione
*mp3rtp support is now optional (broken as of August 2001)

Fixed now, even if this was just a rename of beta3 I've added the mp3rtp useflag that's now disabled by default and stated unsupported in the desc file.
