Description Olivier Reisch (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-02-04 13:31:32 UTC
It looks like fontconfig-2.1-r1 messes up fonts in KDE (they are all displayed
as blocks instead of characters). According to Gerk, the solution is to
recompile QT and kdelibs after having merged the new fontconfig. So maybe we
should add an einfo message at the end of the ebuild to tell people to recompile
those libraries if their fonts are whacked up. Not sure whether it has any
impact on gnome/gtk stuff.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge fontconfig-2.1-r1
2. launch kde
3. look at ugliness

Actual Results:
KDE is fontless

Expected Results:
KDE should show fonts

This may also hold true for xft stuff as well. They seem to want to go as a set, thoughts on this Az ?
Comment 2 Martin Schlemmer (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-02-04 16:08:55 UTC
I had no font problems with gtk+/gnome/mozilla after initial update
of fontconfig to -r1 ... Did you restart X ?
Comment 3 Olivier Reisch (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-02-05 05:16:22 UTC
Well, Moz fonts looked real dirty, but i hadn't restarted X then. When i restarted X
and saw KDE was still all b0rked I didn't try moz again and reverted to old fontconfig
right away. So i wouldn't know about anything gtk... But KDE was broken for sure.
Comment 4 Martin Schlemmer (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-02-05 09:34:15 UTC
Did talk to gerk .. we should prob PDEPEND on qt/xft if they are installed.
The only problem is that PDEPEND do not work as expected. I have it that
no matter if required/latest version is already installed, it should still
remerge whatever after, but it does not :/
Comment 5 Dan Armak (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-04-01 16:02:07 UTC
I only learned of this bug today almost by accident... What's the current status, and what if
anything has been done (since the comments here don't describe any action)?
Comment 6 Martin Schlemmer (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-04-01 16:42:56 UTC
Outstanding portage bug, like many others. Or maybe its me not understanding
what PDEPEND should do.
Comment 7 Seemant Kulleen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-04-20 03:42:08 UTC
yeah, portage missing feature.

However, as of xfree-4.3.0-r2 (to be unmasked into stable in a few hours), xft is built right into xfree, so this might not be an issue any more. Doctomoe, have you tried that version yet?
Comment 8 Martin Holzer (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-07-09 12:47:18 UTC
closing with newer versions
