I'm using gnome 2.16. I've noticed that automounting CDs/USB drives/etc doesn't work (gnome-mount manually works so I don't think its a permissions problem). I noticed that gnome-volume-manager isn't running (even though it should be in my session from the /usr/share/gnome/autostart/gnome-volume-manager.desktop file). When I try to start gnome-volume-manager, it just returns to the prompt with no error message. I've tried "gnome-volume-manager -daemon=no" and "gnome-volume-manager -no-daemon", both just return me to the prompt right away. # emerge --info Portage 2.1.2_pre2-r7 (default-linux/x86/2006.1/desktop, gcc-4.1.1, glibc-2.4-r4, 2.6.17.11 i686) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.17.11 i686 AMD Athlon(tm) Processor Gentoo Base System version 1.12.5 Last Sync: Tue, 10 Oct 2006 19:00:01 +0000 distcc 2.18.3 i686-pc-linux-gnu (protocols 1 and 2) (default port 3632) [disabled] app-admin/eselect-compiler: [Not Present] dev-java/java-config: 1.3.1-r1, 2.0.30 dev-lang/python: 2.4.3-r4 dev-python/pycrypto: 2.0.1-r5 dev-util/ccache: [Not Present] dev-util/confcache: [Not Present] sys-apps/sandbox: 1.2.18.1 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.60 sys-devel/automake: 1.4_p6, 1.5, 1.6.3, 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.9.6-r2 sys-devel/binutils: 2.17 sys-devel/gcc-config: 1.3.13-r4 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.22 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.17-r1 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86 ~x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CBUILD="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-march=i686 -O2 -pipe" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/3.5/env /usr/kde/3.5/share/config /usr/kde/3.5/shutdown /usr/share/X11/xkb /usr/share/config" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/env.d /etc/env.d/java/ /etc/gconf /etc/java-config/vms/ /etc/revdep-rebuild /etc/terminfo /etc/texmf/web2c" CXXFLAGS="-march=i686 -O2 -pipe" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoconfig collision-protection distlocks metadata-transfer sandbox sfperms strict userpriv usersandbox" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://mirror.datapipe.net/gentoo http://194.117.143.69 http://85.25.128.62" MAKEOPTS="-j1" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_RSYNC_OPTS="--recursive --links --safe-links --perms --times --compress --force --whole-file --delete --delete-after --stats --timeout=180 --exclude=/distfiles --exclude=/local --exclude=/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage /usr/local/ag-portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="x86 3dnow X Xaw3d a52 aac aalib acpi alsa apache2 arts audiofile avahi berkdb bitmap-fonts bzip2 cairo cdr cjk cli crypt cups curl dbus dga dlloader dri dts dv dvb dvd dvdr eds elibc_glibc emacs emboss encode esd exif expat f77 faad fam fbcon ffmpeg fftw firefox flac fortran gcj gd gdbm gif ginac glut gmp gnome gnustep gnutls gphoto2 gpm gstreamer gtk gtk2 gtkhtml hal idn imagemagick input_devices_evdev input_devices_keyboard input_devices_mouse isdnlog jack java jpeg kernel_linux lcms leim libcaca libg++ lirc lirc_devices_realmagic live mad matroska mikmod mmx mng mono mozilla mp3 mpeg mysql nas ncurses nls nptl nptlonly offensive ogg openal opengl oss pam pcre pdf perl plotutils png ppds pppd python qhull qt3 quicktime radeon readline reflection rtc samba scanner sdk sdl session slang speex spell spl sqlite sse ssl svg tcl tcltk tcpd tetex theora threads tiff tk truetype truetype-fonts type1-fonts udev unicode usb userland_GNU v4l v4l2 vcd video_cards_fbdev video_cards_i810 video_cards_mach64 video_cards_radeon video_cards_v4l video_cards_vesa video_cards_vga vorbis win32codecs wmf wxwindows xinerama xml xorg xosd xv xvid zlib" Unset: CTARGET, EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS, INSTALL_MASK, LANG, LC_ALL, LDFLAGS, LINGUAS, PORTAGE_RSYNC_EXTRA_OPTS
same issue here....makes it really hard to figure out whats broken when the thing doesn't spit out any errors or nothing....
I wonder if this is http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=359443 from upstream. I'm using startx. Are you using startx (as opposed to gdm) Jordan?
yes, I am. I actually saw this thread: http://www.mail-archive.com/blfs-support@linuxfromscratch.org/msg06239.html when searching for the same issue, pretty much reports the same thing...
ok changing summary to include startx info and closing upstream. I think upstream likes their bugs triaged so perhaps you should add a "Me too" there.
Workaround as per the thread Jordan found: After logging in, I ran "sessreg -a -l $DISPLAY -x /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers cbm" where cbm is my username. Then gnome-volume-manager runs correctly. Before this "fix": $ who root tty1 Sep 19 21:23 cbm tty6 Oct 15 10:48 cbm pts/0 Oct 15 10:49 (:0.0) cbm pts/1 Oct 15 10:49 (:0.0) After: $ who root tty1 Sep 19 21:23 cbm tty6 Oct 15 10:48 cbm pts/0 Oct 15 10:49 (:0.0) cbm pts/1 Oct 15 10:49 (:0.0) cbm :0.0 Oct 15 12:22 Now gnome-volume-manager finds the :0.0 and works.
Also, I had to run "sessreg -a -l $DISPLAY -x /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers cbm" as root, which sort of precludes adding it to my .xinitrc. Anyway, its a workaround that at least makes automounting functional until the upstream bug is fixed.
This is already fixed upstream in gnome-volume-manager-2.17.0 , exactly was fixed with this commit[1], I'm also running gentoo and I only copied the gnome-volume-manager-2.15.0.ebuild to my local overlay and rename it to 2.17 , update the digest and it emerged well and worked fine.
