I am building an 1.4rc2 system and during the "emerge system", it bombed out emerging ftp. In particular, the linker couldn't find the ssl library. Openssl shows up in pkglist, so I'm assuming its okay. I changed /etc/make.conf to include "-ssl" and reran it and it works okay. I'm assuming there is a bug in the ssl patch that is part of ftp. In additional to the fatal error, it also had a bunch of warnings. If need be, I can get trace of these and attach them to this later. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. emerge sync 2. emerge system 3. Actual Results: Fatal error compiling ftp. Unable to link in ssl Expected Results: Compile I'm using a stage2 tarball. I starte to install a stage3, but it was truncated and aborted, so I dumpted the stage2 over the top of it.
net-ftp/ftp will not install during an emerge system. This is/should be done AFTER the "emerge system" ??? Please post applicable error information....
lack of info + you're not supposed to emerge anything until after you get to stage3
According to the install guide, I am supposed to do an emerge system in Stage 2: From the example at http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-x86-install.xml: # emerge -p system [lists the packages to be installed] # emerge system Which I did. The follow packages were installed. I wonder if I got extra packages due to my USE flags. sys-kernel/linux-headers-2.4.19 sys-apps/portage-2.0.46-r9 sys-apps/bash-2.05b-r3 sys-apps/util-linux-2.11y sys-apps/bzip2-1.0.2-r2 sys-apps/man-1.5k-r1 sys-apps/groff-1.18.1 sys-apps/kbd-1.06-r1 sys-apps/cpio-2.4.2-r4 sys-apps/debianutils-1.16.3 sys-apps/diffutils-2.8.4-r1 sys-apps/grub-0.92-r1 sys-apps/ed-0.2-r3 sys-apps/fbset-2.1 sys-apps/file-3.39 sys-apps/fileutils-4.1.11 sys-apps/findutils-4.1.7-r1 sys-apps/gawk-3.1.1-r1 sys-apps/grep-2.5-r1 sys-apps/gzip-1.3.3 sys-apps/less-378-r1 sys-apps/hdparm-5.2-r3 sys-apps/modutils-2.4.22 sys-apps/net-tools-1.60-r5 sys-apps/psmisc-21.2 sys-apps/sed-4.0.5 sys-apps/netkit-base-0.17-r6 sys-apps/procps-2.0.10-r1 sys-apps/shadow-4.0.3-r3 sys-apps/setserial-2.17-r2 sys-apps/sh-utils-2.0.15 sys-apps/miscfiles-1.3 sys-apps/texinfo-4.3-r1 sys-apps/pam-login-3.7 sys-apps/sharutils-4.2.1-r6 sys-apps/tar-1.13.25-r3 sys-apps/textutils-2.1 sys-apps/which-2.14 sys-apps/tcp-wrappers-7.6-r4 sys-apps/devfsd-1.3.25 sys-apps/baselayout-1.8.5.8 sys-apps/e2fsprogs-1.32-r2 sys-apps/iptables-1.2.7a-r3 sys-apps/man-pages-1.54 sys-apps/cronbase-0.2.1-r2 sys-libs/glibc-2.3.1-r2 sys-libs/zlib-1.1.4 sys-libs/pam-0.75-r11 sys-libs/db-1.85-r1 sys-libs/db-3.2.9-r1 sys-libs/gdbm-1.8.0-r5 sys-libs/readline-4.2a-r1 sys-libs/ncurses-5.3-r1 sys-libs/pwdb-0.61-r4 sys-libs/slang-1.4.5-r2 sys-libs/cracklib-2.7-r6 sys-devel/gcc-config-1.2.7 sys-devel/libperl-5.8.0 sys-devel/gettext-0.11.5 sys-devel/libtool-1.4.1-r10 sys-devel/m4-1.4p sys-devel/autoconf-2.54 sys-devel/automake-1.6.3 sys-devel/patch-2.5.4-r4 sys-devel/flex-2.5.4a-r5 sys-devel/bc-1.06-r4 sys-devel/bin86-0.15.5 sys-devel/bison-1.35 sys-devel/make-3.80 sys-devel/binutils-2.13.90.0.16-r1 sys-devel/gcc-3.2.1-r6 sys-devel/perl-5.8.0-r9 dev-python/python-fchksum-1.6.1 dev-libs/expat-1.95.4 dev-libs/openssl-0.9.6g dev-libs/glib-1.2.10-r5 dev-libs/glib-2.2.0 dev-lang/python-2.2.2 app-shells/sash-3.4-r5 dev-perl/Safe-2.09 dev-perl/ExtUtils-MakeMaker-6.05-r4 app-editors/nano-1.0.9-r2 net-ftp/ftp-0.17-r2 net-misc/wget-1.8.2-r2 net-misc/openssh-3.5_p1 net-misc/dhcpcd-1.3.22_p3-r3 net-misc/rsync-2.5.6_pre20021105-r1 app-arch/ncompress-4.2.4 dev-util/pkgconfig-0.14.0 dev-java/java-config-0.2.7 dev-java/blackdown-jdk-1.3.1-r7 media-libs/pdflib-4.0.3-r1
well, it should have emerged openssl before ftp ... so please post more of the error ... and if you dont have an error, we cant fix the bug ;) i've done this thing before (USE=ssl, emerge system on a stage2) and its worked before ...
Drat. I don't have any logs of it. I guess you'll have to close it then. I actually had a fairly long USE string and I wonder if it got me in trouble. The really weird thing was I had problems with other packages. I got to digging and several classes that according to pkginfo were installed weren't actually installed. I had to manually dig through their CONTENTS files and check for missing files. Where there were missing files, I reemerged the package.
i'm not sure what we can do without any more additional information. so i'm closing this one.
