In the howto you write:
Binary drivers include x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers and x11-drivers/nvidia-legacy-drivers for nVidia cards, media-video/mgavideo for Matrox cards and media-video/ati-drivers for ATI cards.

Do you mean the x11-drivers/xf86-video-mga package because media-video/mgavideo doesn't exist on my (very recently synced) tree?

media-video/mgavideo was removed 9 months ago.
I've never used it.
x11-drivers/xf86-video-mga is what you use when you set VIDEO_CARDS="mga" when you emerge xorg-server.
