These are happaning more and more frequently and with increasing randomality. There is 
seemingly no reason for portage to randomly seg fault like this. Weird.

gcc segfaults and 'internal compiler errors' are usually the result of either bugs in gcc itself 
(what version are you using? try the new 3.2.2 prerelease in ~arch maybe?) or of hardware 
instability (flaky memory, cpu, whatever). 
If they are "happening more and more often", it's probably hardware trouble, I'm afraid. KDE is 
one of the heaviest compiles around and so it shows the most errors of this kind. You could try 
some stressing programs (like cpuburn and memtest86).

I confirm that. I once had that problem with KDE too and it was fixed by installing 
RAM of a good manufacturer. No problems since.

I took out my ram and scrubbed it with an eraser......I have had no more internel compiler 
errors since....FIXED
