The answer to the question "Will my binary NVIDIA/ATI drivers work?" in the AMD64 FAQ states "You can install them by executing emerge nvidia-kernel or...", however the nvidia-kernel ebuild is masked for removal.  It should recommend nvidia-drivers or nvidia-legacy-drivers, depending on the age of the hardware.
