Description Michael Evans 2006-09-28 13:49:02 UTC
September 13, 2006 - Check out the latest version of Google Earth (Release 4 - BETA)

They released a new build of the beta, but don't seem to have changed the name. However I saw a popup one time after loading it that directed me to a download link... (it has since not ocured again, but I can't get googleearth to load because of GL issues... I've not verified that it's not my problem yet.)

How about upstream starting to use civilized versioning scheme like everyone else? :X
Comment 2 Matthias Liertzer 2006-09-29 18:38:42 UTC
they are using a civilised version scheme, they just don't put that information on their website... I guess they just don't want to confuse the average user because usually you simply download and install the new version when the popup appears telling you that a new version is available while starting the program.
you can check the version number in google earth's help->check update dialog:
Old version was 4.0.1693.0
new version is 4.0.2091.0

the only problem is, that you can only get google earthes newest binary from the server and this binary is always named GoogleEarth4.bin so there's no versioning in the filename, which is bad for portage as this means we can only have one version of it in portage, otherwise different versions will screw up badly

i usually rename the file i downloaded appending the version. couldn't we rename the downloaded file in distfiles with the version the ebuild is done for?
ok there will be the case i install googleearth, the ebuild is not updated but a new version is there for download blocking the merge but (i hope) it would be only a temporary situation.
