What protocol? How big of a file? When I do this on my amd64 install, I find I can send files under roughly 6 MB (256kbit upload) over AIM with no problem, but I get a similar crash with larger files.

And its MSN protocol
I have had similar crashes only when dbus is enabled. Disabling dbus should help.
As in bug#148128, this is not a gaim issue, but a dbus issue. I'm going to be getting with the dbus folks to see what we can do about it. I am also trying to track down a patch that other distros have used to fix the issue.
Applied the patch mentioned in the other bug report to solve the dbus issue.
