Description Marijn Schouten (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-09-25 05:51:40 UTC
I was trying to start an ssh server, so I did:

/etc/init.d/sshd start

Unfortunately all I got was a blinking cursor. So I upgraded openssh to the newest ~amd versions. Now it said "Caching service dependencies" and then the same thing: nothing.

Commenting out "need net" from the script allows it to run. I did have networking, but I started it manually without using the scripts. Anyway, an error message should have been produced, instead of failing without error. Maybe "need net" should even be removed entirely.

you should post more information with your bug reports:
 - `emerge info`
 - /etc/conf.d/net

what does "a blinking cursor" ? does it mean you got no output at all from the init.d script ?
Comment 2 Marijn Schouten (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-09-25 08:34:35 UTC
blinking cursor means zero output other then a newline and a blinking cursor and that I don't get a prompt back. Either it is doing nothing or waiting for something or looping. /etc/conf.d/net is only comments. This is a quite new install and almost everything is also still in default 2006.1 amd64stage3 state.

You cannot start networking manually and except init script dependencies to see this. What net scripts do you have in your runlevels and what are the values of RC_STRICT_NET_CHECKING and RC_PARALLEL_STARTUP in /etc/conf.d/net?

Lastly, do any net services report their status as starting/inactive in rc-status?
Comment 4 Marijn Schouten (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-09-29 04:09:58 UTC
RC_NET_STRICT_CHECKING="no"
RC_PARALLEL_STARTUP="no"

in rc-status I only have started and stopped services. I had net.eth1 script in default but the interface was not connected. I started net.wlan0 manually.

This should be fixed in baselayout-1.13.0_alpha11. Re-open if you disagree.
