Description Nathan Nobbe 2006-09-24 16:40:42 UTC
on eclipse 3.2 when i start the application, suppose id like to search for a workspace; in the file system browser i can see triangle shapes that indicate expandable directories, but there are no words next to them with directory names.
if i select one (blindly), i enter the app and the same happens for the navigator view. i have also tried the download from eclipse.org with the same result. firefox uses the same interface and it works normally there. i can provide screenshots if you have a place for me to post them.

eclipse navigator interface

here you can see the issue also exists in the eclipse navigator perspective
Comment 5 Nathan Nobbe 2006-10-01 20:57:38 UTC
i am certain this issue is a cause of the jdk. currently im running on (user vm)
IBM JDK 1.5.0.2 [ibm-jdk-bin-1.5]

i rolled back to
IBM JDK 1.4.2.5 [ibm-jdk-bin-1.4]

and the issue was gone. i wonder if i missed something in the java upgrade guide.
i will go through it again to see if i made a mistake.
Comment 6 Nathan Nobbe 2006-10-01 21:48:49 UTC
i went through the upgrade guide; ended up pulling down new versions of java-config-wrapper, and something else maybe (cant recall). i then remerged the ibm 1.5 jdk and the problem persists. i also read through the common issues documentation and nothing there refers to the problem.
i also tried eclipse 3.1.2 with both the 1.5 and 1.4 jdks; it is clear the issue is the jdk; because i observe the same behaivior with this version of eclipse. the issue is present with the 1.5 jdk and not with the 1.4 version.
Comment 7 Josh Nichols (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-10-04 14:41:14 UTC
3.2.1 was released recently. Could you give that a try? I will try to reproduce it on a ppc machine.

>

I have already tried the 3.2.1 version of Eclipse from www.eclipse.org; however, upon your request i emerged Eclipse 3.2.1 from portage only to find the same issue. As i said, im almost certain the issue is related to ibm-jdk-bin-1.5. im not sure what it could be because of my unfamiliarity with the location of jdk files in the filesystem (and the contents of gentoo related configuration files), but maybe something just isnt in the right place; some people on irc were saying that ibm is sparatic with its distfile locations...
are there some tests i can run against the jdk to test its stability that might isolate a problem with the jdk?
Comment 9 Josh Nichols (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-10-08 20:29:12 UTC
I've just confirmed this. Now the question is how to fix it...
Comment 10 Josh Nichols (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-10-08 20:30:33 UTC
This is looking like an issue with SWT specifically, as you can observe the problem if you run azureus (which uses swt) using ibm-jdk-bin-1.4.
Comment 11 Josh Nichols (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-10-08 20:43:14 UTC
Just tested on amd64 with ibm-jdk-bin-1.5, and there wasn't a problem there. Will need to test on ppc64 and x86, but right now I'm suspecting it's only a problem with ppc.

In the mean time, you probably should always use 1.4 at least to launch eclipse. After it is launched, you can configure it to use 1.5 for executing/compiling. See Window -> Preferences, then under Java -> Installed JREs. You can add a new vm, and point jre_home at /usr/lib/jvm/ibm-jdk-bin-1.5.

Tested with x86: everything looks good

i installed ibm-jdk-bin-1.5.0.3.
same issue with running; the screenshots i sent before are the same. also, when starting w/ 1.4 jdk then switching to 1.5 the application is not stable and frequently crashes.
Comment 15 Nathan Nobbe 2006-10-16 22:22:49 UTC
I have registered a bug at eclipse.org.
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=161182

I have also changed the severity of this bug to critical, simply because the application is not very useable for java 5 development at this point.

i can confirm this as well with azureus 2.5.0.0 and ibm-jdk-bin-1.5.0.3. i can see the text with ibm-jdk-bin-1.4.2.6-r4 but azureus is unstable under 1.4. swt is version swt-3.2-r2.
Comment 21 Federico Fissore 2006-11-15 12:54:58 UTC
(In reply to comment #20)
as per upstream comment
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=143061#c15
it seems to be an issue related to cairo and pango.
as cairo is a use flag, I wonder if you would like to give a try to the experimental ebuild of eclipse that's stored into java overlay here
http://overlays.gentoo.org/proj/java/browser/migrated-java-experimental-overlay/dev-util/eclipse-sdk
emerging it with USE="-cairo" and see what happens

just be sure to have time and will to emerge back your current installed version if something breaks
Comment 22 David Gurvich 2006-11-16 09:53:23 UTC
Had 2 issues with ibm-jdk-1.5/eclipse-sdk on ppc. The ebuild does not rebuild all the libraries, particularly the swt libraries, and the resulting binary crashes. Using gcj from gcj-overlay works.
Comment 23 Jörg Lesch 2006-12-04 13:32:30 UTC
I set the java-vm to 1.4, installed eclipse from the web, everything was fine. After installing the CDE plugin I am back to the same problem, not contens in the tress is visible, and eclipse crashes very often.
Comment 24 Nathan Nobbe 2006-12-04 17:45:47 UTC
i installed eclipse-sdk-3.2.1-r2 from gcj-overlay; i compiled without cairo support and tried with & without gcj support. using IBM JDK 1.5.0.3, the problem persits.
also, i should mention using ibm-jdk-1.4.2, eclipse is unstable; it frequently crashes.
it is also worth mention that i have recently upgraded to kernel 2.6.18-r1;
i can post a screenshot if necessary, but it is still the same as before :>
sorry for absence of activity, really busy lately; thanks for all the effort from everyone.
Comment 25 mminutoli 2007-01-22 17:47:43 UTC

have you tried compiling eclipse-sdk? i know the issue is evidenced in both applications, but i originally filed the bug on eclipse.
since you are the only one who has gotten this working with azureus, can you please try to compile eclipse-sdk?
if it works for you, perhaps we can try to discern the difference between your system and the others and then isolate the problem...

You are probably using some outdated overlay that has java-utils-2.eclass. Hard to tell without emerge --info.

It is Azureus 2.5.0.4. I have both ibm-jdk-bin-1.5 and ibm-jdk-bin-1.4 (SR7). However I don't know what is running under (surely its under "About Azureus", but like I said I'm at school)

From the dump it seems that it crashed somewhere in pango part.

And all people with ppc should probably also check out the testcase at upstream bug https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=143061 and report results there, thanks.

Eclipse compiles and works on my computer. Enough said. When should I be expecting my hate mail? If there's anything else you need, let me know.

terinstock,

i saw you post this in comment#31

It is Azureus 2.5.0.4. I have both ibm-jdk-bin-1.5 and ibm-jdk-bin-1.4 (SR7).
However I don't know what is running under (surely its under "About Azureus",
but like I said I'm at school)

can you please show the output of

java-config -L

the 1.5 jdk should be highlighted indicating that is the one running azureus and eclipse on your system

I think that's not needed, the screenshot proves it's 1.5, also you can't run azureus 2.5.0.4 with 1.4 because it's 1.5 bytecode.

Anyway those library versions he posted look like usual stable, upstream bug has example of crashing with same versions except slightly older pango, some people with problems here run ~arch... maybe it's not about the versions.

Upstream bug suggests it fails with font-related strlen. So maybe the set of fonts available affects this somehow?
Comment 38 Nathan Nobbe 2007-02-03 17:15:48 UTC
i have run the tests from upstream. all of the tests pass except one; the code from comment# 35:
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=143061#c35

there were 2 pieces of code to run; one written in C (PR143061.c), which invoked a gtk open file dialog. The C program appeared to be working as expected.
The other was some sort of swt call to gtk libraries. I dont know if its supposed to invoke a gui, but there is some output indicating an unhandled exception is raised. Perhaps in the absence of an exception the same dialog from the C program is opened.
the first time i ran PR143061.java there was an issue with fontconfig

nathan@nnppc ~/Software/eclipse/testCode/PR143061/java $ java -classpath /home/nathan/Software/eclipse/plugins/org.eclipse.swt.gtk.linux.ppc_3.2.1.v3235.jar:. PR143061
GTK version 2.10.6

No fonts found; this probably means that the fontconfig
library is not correctly configured. You may need to
edit the fonts.conf configuration file. More information
about fontconfig can be found in the fontconfig(3) manual
page and on http://fontconfig.org

i upgraded fontconfig to 2.3.2-r1; and still had to modify

/etc/fonts/conf.d/80-delicious.conf

but then the program stopped complaining about fontconfig and began to issue the unhandled exception and a core dump. the problem appeared to be from glibc; but i already have

glibc 2.5

installed. so i upgraded gtk to version

gtk 2.10.9

the problem persists. following is the output from PR143061.java and i have attached the core dumps it produces.

nathan@nnppc ~/Software/eclipse/testCode/PR143061/java $ java -classpath /home/nathan/Software/eclipse/plugins/org.eclipse.swt.gtk.linux.ppc_3.2.1.v3235.jar:. PR143061GTK version 2.10.9

I have the same problem in my ibook G4 w/2006.1
I solved this problem by "installing" (using):
 - ibm-jdk 1.6 beta (no ebuild)
 - sun jdk for Embedded: lack of swing support, but not needed for SWT (no ebuild)
(both jdk for PPC)

seen's it only for ibm-jdk-bin-1.5.*
Comment 41 Nathan Nobbe 2007-02-08 01:13:13 UTC
(In reply to comment #40)

YES!

I have downloaded the experimental 1.6 SDK for 32 bit Linux PPC installations from IBM
https://www14.software.ibm.com/webapp/iwm/web/reg/download.do?source=swerpsw-java6-3&S_PKG=code&lang=en_US&cp=UTF-8&dlmethod=http

and now Eclipse-3.2 (Installed from Portage) is working again!

So far it appears to be working well, with the PHP plugin, C/C++ plugin and with Java files; and of course the Navigator view is working properly! I will be using it extensively so we will see if it holds up under the experimental SDK.

As per the bug; I suppose it is still valid since technically it address the 1.5 JRE. it can remain open, but as far as im concerned, if Eclipse 3.2 continues to work under Java6 I am totally satisfied.

Thanks again to everyone who spent time on this issue.

This is working fine on my stable machine, both eclipse and azureus correctly display text and work properly with ibm-jdk-bin-1.5.0.3-r1. If it's still not working properly for you, please re-open the bug.
Comment 47 Fernando J. Pereda (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2007-04-07 15:48:04 UTC
It's not working for me at all. Neither with the eclipse ebuild nor with the eclipse binary package.

I'm using ibm-jdk-bin-1.5.0.4 (it didn't work with .3-r1 either, but I can try again if you want...)

People who have and haven't this working should put together some installed packages/useflags lists and find what makes the difference. I still suspect it might be some particular font installed on the system that kills it.
Comment 49 Joe Jezak (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2007-04-07 16:45:43 UTC
Yeah, I got the list of fonts from ferdy, he's got 10 more installed than the working version I have here. I'll test and see if I can find one that breaks it.
Comment 50 Joe Jezak (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2007-04-07 23:18:52 UTC
Doesn't seem to make a difference, using Ferdy's fonts results in no change. Do you have any other ideas?
Comment 51 Joe Jezak (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2007-04-27 03:56:48 UTC

I have exactly the same problem here on my PPC with ibm-jdk-1.5.

To make things worse, Eclipse crashes very frequently here with ibm-jdk-1.4, so it's not usable at all for me. (see bug 179454)

Will give ibm-jdk-1.6 a try...

Comment 59 David Gurvich 2007-11-21 20:36:21 UTC
I've been able to build eclipse using ibm-jdk-bin-1.4.2* or gcj on ppc. If built with gcj, must also be run with gcj. If built with ibm-jdk-bin, can be run with later versions of ibm-jdk-bin. Seems to run well under 1.5.* and 1.6.*. Oddly I haven't actually tried to run it using 1.4.2.*

Perhaps a eclipse-3.2.1-r2 (version in portage) should generate an error if being built with >ibm-jdk-bin-1.4.9999 on ppc. The following might be possible
"You are building eclipse using an ibm-jdk-bin > than 1.4.9999 on ppc. To build eclipse you must use an earlier version of ibm-jdk-bin. Once built a later jvm can be used."
