Description Michael Wharmby 2006-09-22 06:01:28 UTC
Using the tftp netboot image (gentoo-sparc64-2005.0-20050717.tftpboot) to build an Ultra1. When I chroot into the new 2006.1 environment (untarred from md5 checked stage3 and portage-20060917 tar balls) I get the following error:
FATAL: kernel too old
Unimplemented SPARC system call 188

The system worked fine when built from the 2006.0 tar ball.

I can get round this by using the boot CDs for the minute, but I'd rather be using the netboot images. Also I have an SS10 and SS5 (sparc32 systems) that I want to install 2006.1 onto, but I'm guessing I'll get the same error and you don't provide live CDs sparc32.
Any thoughts?

I'm working on new sparc64 netboot images to fix this. Hoping to have something in the next week or so.

If you go looking through the historical section on your favorite Gentoo mirror, you can find a sparc32 Install CD from 2004.0, but it will have the same problem as the netboot images when using the 2006.1 stage tarballs.

Once I get a working sparc64 netboot image, I'll attempt a sparc32 one. However since sparc32 is not an officially supported Gentoo architecture, it may be a whil e before anything happens on that front.

any news on this?

agaffney & weeve are working on a new netboot image with a 2.6 kernel.
please don't start pinging - netboot isn't release material, it's always been experimental and maybe we'll consider promoting it to release (supported) stuff but it's not on the 2007.0 list.

That the latest experimental netboot image and it's 2.6-based, it should work.
If there are issues (which i'm sure there are) ping us on #gentoo-sparc on IRC.

(sorry, no IRC at the moment)

the image does not seem to boot on my netra x1:

Sun Netra X1 (UltraSPARC-IIe 400MHz), No Keyboard
OpenBoot 4.0, 512 MB memory installed, Serial #xxxxxxxx.
Ethernet address 0:3:ba:xx:xx:xx, Host ID: xxxxxxxx.

ok boot net
Boot device: /pci@1f,0/ethernet@c File and args:
6fb000
Remapping the kernel... done.
Booting Linux...

And that's it. Nothing more. Even if I do append a "console=ttyS0,9600" I get nothing more.

oh.. It's netboot-sparc64-20070724.img by the way. The previous image (dated April I think) did boot fine, but hadn't the necessary driver for the Ethernet device.

Tried upgrading to the latest firmware?
That version is horribly buggy.
Comment 8 Markus Rothe (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2007-08-03 19:19:05 UTC
ok. Will try. Could take some time though ;-)
Comment 9 Gustavo Zacarias (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2007-08-03 19:20:32 UTC
You can get it from sunsolve directly, and in many cases you can netboot it :-)
