Openoffice (package: openoffice) has strange symbols (some kind of hieroglyphs) in top menu bar (see following link: http://krf.electrostorm.net/pub/imgs/ooo_symbols.jpg) Problems encounter in all parts of OOo, same in calc, draw, etc. Xorg.0.log first gave me errors about missing luximr.ttf, but i could fix that. Now OOo starts fine, no errors (none in Xorg.0.log or messages) at all, but I have these wonderful symbols. I still think it's a font problem, but I don't know what to do next. By the way, is luximr.ttf actually required by OOo? What I've tried already: - Installed openoffice-bin instead of openoffice - Removed .ooo-2.0 in homedir several times - Tried OOo as root, same problem - Tried to cope with font settings (disabling anti-aliasing, sub-pixeling), but I've no idea what I am doing so I stopped that :) PS: Fonts in (eg.) options dialog are OK Thanks for help, KRF ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Portage 2.1.1 (default-linux/x86/2006.1, gcc-4.1.1, glibc-2.4-r3, 2.6.17.6 i686) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.17.6 i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz Gentoo Base System version 1.12.5 Last Sync: Thu, 21 Sep 2006 06:30:01 +0000 distcc 2.18.3 i686-pc-linux-gnu (protocols 1 and 2) (default port 3632) [disabled] ccache version 2.3 [enabled] app-admin/eselect-compiler: [Not Present] dev-java/java-config: 1.2.11-r1 dev-lang/python: 2.4.3-r1 dev-python/pycrypto: 2.0.1-r5 dev-util/ccache: 2.3 dev-util/confcache: 0.4.2-r1 sys-apps/sandbox: 1.2.17 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.59-r7 sys-devel/automake: 1.4_p6, 1.5, 1.6.3, 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.9.6-r2 sys-devel/binutils: 2.16.1-r3 sys-devel/gcc-config: 1.3.13-r3 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.22 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.17-r1 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CBUILD="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-O2 -march=pentium4 -pipe" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/3.5/env /usr/kde/3.5/share/config /usr/kde/3.5/shutdown /usr/lib/fax /usr/share/X11/xkb /usr/share/config /var/spool/fax/etc" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/env.d /etc/gconf /etc/revdep-rebuild /etc/splash /etc/terminfo" CXXFLAGS="-O2 -march=pentium4 -pipe" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoconfig ccache confcache distlocks metadata-transfer parallel-fetch sandbox sfperms strict" GENTOO_MIRRORS=" ftp://ftp.ussg.iu.edu/pub/linux/gentoo ftp://ftp.ucsb.edu/pub/mirrors/linux/gentoo/ ftp://ftp.wh2.tu-dresden.de/pub/mirrors/gentoo ftp://ftp.gentoo.mesh-solutions.com/gentoo/ http://mirror.switch.ch/mirror/gentoo/ ftp://mirror.switch.ch/mirror/gentoo/ ftp://ftp.solnet.ch/mirror/Gentoo" LANG="de_DE.utf8" LC_ALL="de_DE.utf8" LINGUAS="de" MAKEOPTS="-j4" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_RSYNC_OPTS="--recursive --links --safe-links --perms --times --compress --force --whole-file --delete --delete-after --stats --timeout=180 --exclude='/distfiles' --exclude='/local' --exclude='/packages'" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="x86 X alsa apache2 apm bitmap-fonts bluetooth cairo cdr cli crypt cups dbus dlloader dri dvd dvdr dvdread elibc_glibc encode esd fax fcdsl_cards_fcdsl ffmpeg flac foomaticdb fortran gdbm gif gpm gtk hal icq imlib input_devices_keyboard input_devices_mouse ipv6 irc isdnlog jabber java jpeg kde kernel_linux libg++ linguas_de lm_sensors mad mmx mmxext motif mp3 mpeg mplayer msn mysql ncurses nls nptl nptlonly nsplugin ogg opengl oscar oss pam pcre pdf perl php png pppd python qt3 quicktime readline reflection sdl session spl sse sse2 ssl tcpd truetype truetype-fonts type1-fonts udev unicode usb userland_GNU video_cards_fglrx video_cards_radeon video_cards_vesa vorbis win32codecs wxGTK wxwindows xcomposite xine xml xorg xscreensaver xv zlib" Unset: CTARGET, EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS, INSTALL_MASK, LDFLAGS, PORTAGE_RSYNC_EXTRA_OPTS, PORTDIR_OVERLAY
This is not a Gentoo Bugzilla product bug, read the description.
Please, attach the screenshot here, don't refer to third-party links that die in a couple of days and render the bug useless for anyone hitting the same issue.

Try to set another interface font in KDE, OOo uses this for setting it's UI font, looks like you are using a broken font.
That's really awkward. Weird. Changing menu font from Dingbats 9 to Verdana 9 did the trick. (Other Apps had no problem with Dingbats.) Too easy to tell the truth. Thanks for quick help. Can be closed
Fixed.
